Welcome to the website of the Ubuntu Team Philippines. The Philippine Team is made up of many members from around the country, with the goal of increasing awareness (and use) of Ubuntu within the country.

Ubuntu is a complete Linux-based operating system, freely available with both community and professional support. It is developed by a large community and we invite you to participate too!

The Ubuntu community is built on the ideas enshrined in the Ubuntu Philosophy: that software should be available free of charge, that software tools should be usable by people in their local language and despite any disabilities, and that people should have the freedom to customise and alter their software in whatever way they see fit.

Six days from now, Ubuntu will release its next version... the Karmic Koala. A week after, the Philippine Team will join teams all over the world in celebration of this event. And everyone is invited. Bring your family and friends, and get to meet local Ubuntu users.

Date: November 6, Friday
Time: 6pm onwards (9pm?)
Venue: Unit 502 Orient Square Building

I am pleased to announce that our website, http://ubuntu-ph.org/ , is finally up! It took us almost a year before we got it up and running - but we did it!

I've spent 2 evenings slaving over getting the 5.x data migrated to Drupal 6.13, but we got it intact and working - including user credentials and content, albeit a few broken links. So please treat this site as a work in progress while we iron out the few known bugs.

Added Features:

1) OpenID Access
I'm a huge fan of OpenID so we've enabled this module. There's no longer a need to register on the site itself, use your Launchpad login instead. Users wanting an account should sign in using your Launchpad identity. And those with existing user account is encouraged to link your Launchpad (or any OpenID) identity to your account.

2) Ubuntu LoCo Theme
We've adopted the official LoCo theme for Drupal 6.x and branched it for our use. I plan on heavily modifying it to suit our local needs. Administrators in our Launchpad team would've received notice regarding this matter.

Known Bugs:

1) Ubuntu-PH.org Domain fixed
At the moment, Canonical's working on the ticket I sent to point the domain to the current host. As a workaround, you can access the site by appending the following line on your /etc/hosts.
195.242.99.184 ubuntu-ph.org

2) Temporary Hosting fixed
The domain and the site itself is owned by the Ubuntu-PH community, but the host it's on isn't. This is a temporary measure while looking for a more permanent host. This way, we can freely give away full ftp/vps access to site administrators.
Note: I'm giving the account to the community.

3) Missing 2007-2009 Events and Articles
Since our website was down from 2007, there are no recorded articles available. I'll backtrack our activities and post them during my free time.

4) Theme Rendering Problem on Opera
I'll be spending a good part of my free time double-checking the CSS. Please bear with us while we work on it.

5) Broken Links on a couple of Articles
While I managed to backup the MySQL data, I failed to backup the file directory. Any links to any files saved on the said directory is currently broken. I'll either remove said links or recreate them if I can find them.

6) Missing Avatars
Avatars are saved on the file directory, since we've lost them, the current workaround is for individuals to re-upload them back.

On May 26, 2009, at 7:27PM, Loell Anthony Erecre was officially accepted as an Ubuntu Member by the Asia-Oceania Membership Board. Membership is a recognition of an Ubuntero's significant and sustained contribution to Ubuntu and the community.

Loell has posted a couple of Howtos and provided substantial and timely user-support in the Ubuntu Forums since October 2005, earning him a position as Moderator in the LoCo sub-forum on October 6, 2007.

But his contributions aren't limited to the forums. He developed a third-party tool for searching Personal Package Archives (PPA) Repositories called PPA-Search and has maintained a PPA repository for Gyachi, a Yahoo!Messenger client that has webcam and video-chat support.

Loell hails from Davao City, Philippines whose day job is a Marine Cargo Surveyor and Developer for Syeport Marine Services.

Two days after Jaunty Jackalope (Ubuntu 9.04) was released, the Philippine Team joined hundreds of Local Communities (LoCo) worldwide in celebration of this momentous occasion.

This event was attended by Ubuntu users located in and around the Greater Manila Area. The planned activity didn't push through since everyone was absorbed by the discussion that took place that ranged from the groups' future activities to personal projects. We were also covered by the media reporter/tech aficionado Chin Wong and the celebration was published in the Manila Standard Today a few days after.

The release party was hosted by Johann Tagle of Sagada Solutions. He was also kind enough to feed the hungry participants. Thanks Johann, we had a blast!

Arne Goetje was kind enough to assign the following languages to our team. Projects are now available for translation on the said languages.

  • Hiligaynon
  • Cebuano
  • Pangasinan
  • Pampanga
  • Iloko
  • Bikol
  • Filipino

The Informatics Institute held a Seminar on Basic System Administration on Linux, more specifically, Ubuntu. Mr. Jed Berones, a Network Security Engineer, was tapped as the resource speaker for the said seminar.

Most SMB's and Enterprise businesses are already running Linux, and this seminar will benefit the participants by exposing them to a more stable Operating System. Participants were also provided with hand-outs and certificates of attendance. And because of the success of this event, plans are underway for future seminars.

Our official forum is now located at http://ubuntuforums.org/forumdisplay.php?f=303. The forum on this site would be locked and all concerns should now be posted at Ubuntuforums.org.

The site redirect http://ph.ubuntuforums.org/ would be available in a day or two.

See you there!

Hello All,

I would like to share with you the article I submitted to Manila Bulletin.

I want to promote the use of Ubuntu the same way you do.

Regards,

Raymond

UBUNTU FEISTY FAWN LINUX: WHAT CAN BE FREER THAN FREE?

With the luxury of having 2 personal computers at my disposal and also a recent virus crash in one of them, it left me with an option to format one of them and install an operating system again. As I'm aperson who very open to trying new things, I decided to test install a Linux installation on my whilestill having the option to go back to your traditional common operating system, or Windows as we know it.

Ubuntu-PH.org is undergoing major renovation this month. Would just like to give everyone updates on what we've done so far and what we're planning for the future.

Wikis:
We're almost through reorganizing all wikis. If you check our wiki, you'll notice a much friendlier and accessible interface. We're inviting you to help us improve our website.
